Have you heard about this?
Doing forum marketing is a great way to make money. Many people say it's so easy. You simply have to write 50 posts per week, and the sales orders will pour in. You will sell affiliate products by the thousands. You probably know somebody who's done that. What they forget to tell you is that there are certain traps that you must avoid in order to achieve this outcome. These traps can cost you dearly if you happen to fall into any of them. And, just like the real hunter's traps, they are cleverly hidden in the ground, disguised as something that's very innocent looking.
Firstly, let me tell you what you can do with forum marketing. Secondly, I'll tell you what not to do, in order to avoid one of these particular traps.
Yesterday, when out on our daily walk with the dogs, my husband (who's normally not interested in Internet marketing) asked me questions about a certain forum which I constantly frequent.
"Can people just write ads for affiliate programs there, and sell products simply by writing forum posts?"
"No", I answered him. "That's not the way it works."
In fact, most forums doesn't even allow direct selling in the posts. You'll have to be much more subtle than that.
This particular forum (and many others) allow you to link to a product or homepage within your signature. That means that you should write informative posts, adding real value to the forum and, if people like what they read, they'll check your signature and possibly visit the site you recommend.
Okay, most people know about this rule. So then they become smarter. They make up their own questions such as: "Which web host is the best?" Then they write about all the things that you should look for when you're searching for a new web host.
And they finish by pointing you in the 'right' direction:
"PM me for more info"; "Click the link in my signature to learn more" and so on.
This is big no-no!
Never ask phony questions. Never tell people to PM you in order to be spammed with your ads. Never write and suggest that people should click the link in your signature. They all know how to contact you. They all know how to click a link - but only if what you say in the first place catches their attention.
Your goal is to seem like a helpful person with a wide variety of knowledge in your particular field. Not to look like somebody who's doing blatant self promotion.
